The Essighaus (the "Vinegar House")

The Essighaus (the "Vinegar House")

The historical building at 21 Langenstraße, in which our offices are located, was until its almost complete destruction in 1943 – along with Bremen's Old City Hall (Bremer Rathaus) – one of the most notable examples of the Weser Renaissance architecture in Bremen.

In 1897, following its construction in 1618 and an early checkered history, it became the wine bar “Alt-Bremer Haus”. The building, with its artfully decorated ornamental façade and richly appointed interiors, quickly became known far beyond the city’s borders. In 1901 Bremen merchants founded the East Asia Association in the Essighaus.

The name Essighaus can be traced back to the beginning of the 19th century when it was used as a vinegar factory.

Only the entrance portal, with its double bay windows, and some fragments of the interior remain as evidence of its former beauty. The Essighaus has been a bank building since 1972 and has belonged to DEUTSCHE FACTORING BANK since 1985.
